What is Blackheads, whiteheads and how to get rid of them
Blackheads, we all know them and we all hate them! But the truth is…do we actually know what a blackhead is?
What are blackheads?
Blackheads are open skin pores or hair follicles that are clogged with sebum and dead skin cells that need to come out of the skin. A common misconception is that they are caused by trapped dirt but this is not the case. They are black because the chemical inside, melanin, has been oxidized by the air and turned the dead skin and natural oil (sebum) inside black.
The difference between a blackhead and a whitehead?
The difference is that the blackhead is in an open pore and the whitehead is in a closed pore. A whitehead contains the same dead skin and natural oil (sebum) as a blackhead but because it’s been inside the closed pore and hasn’t been exposed to air, it stays a white colour. With whiteheads, the skin hasn’t ruptured yet. However, the pore only has so much space. As the body continues to produce sebum and dead skin, the pore opens up. If the pore remains clogged once it opens, the blemish turns to a blackhead as it oxidises. When bacteria find clogged pores and begin to feed on it, that’s when whiteheads and blackheads turn into red, inflammatory acne.
